Joey learned this trade in his father's transmission shop in 1982, tearing down Turbo 400s and TorqueFlites by hand. He and Trent still rebuild classic automatics and four-speeds the same way. Every unit is torn down, inspected, rebuilt, and installed in our Apache Junction shop. Nothing goes out to a rebuild house.

Pan bolt counts and outlines narrow down the unit, but the case casting and ID tag confirm it. Not sure what you have? Send us a photo of the pan, or bring the car in.
Every unit comes apart on our bench. We clean and inspect the hard parts and measure end play and wear before we quote the rebuild.
New clutches, steels, bands, seals, gaskets, bushings, and filter, plus synchros and bearings on the four-speeds. Worn hard parts are replaced, not reused.
We set the valve body to stock feel or a firmer street shift, matched to your cam, gear, and how the car gets driven.
Linkage, kickdown or TV cable, cooler lines, and speedometer gear are set on the car. Then we road-test it before you pick it up.
Call with the year, engine, and transmission. We quote rebuilds after teardown and inspection, and nothing moves ahead without your approval.

Joey started in his father's transmission shop in 1982, opened his own shop in New Jersey in 1997, and brought the trade west to Apache Junction in 2016 as Total Automotive & Performance. His son Trent is now his business partner and works beside him in the shop, carrying the family trade into its third generation.
Joey and Trent work on daily drivers, diesel work trucks, classics, and custom projects, while Jenny helps keep the family business moving. The process is simple: inspect the vehicle, explain what they find, and get approval before the repair moves ahead.

Brought my 2016 Buick Regal in for what I thought was a transmission issue. The team at Total Automotive & Performance found it was actually a fuel pressure issue. They gave me a full breakdown on the readings they were getting while performing the diagnostics and explained how and why it was driving the way it was. SHOUT OUT to Big Joey and Trent down at Total Automotive & Performance. I came in with a leaking exhaust manifold that I just had done at a different shop, along with some coolant return lines to the turbo and a gasket at the block the previous mechanic just rallied. Trent took charge, got it fixed, and completely eliminated all the leaks. I thought I needed major work on my brakes and chassis, but they were incredibly honest, took the time to show me exactly what was going on, and saved me a ton of money by only doing what I wanted done. They come with options on fixes and keep a fast, open, clear line of comms. When I need a shop or give a recommendation, it won't be anywhere but Total Automotive & Performance.
